A Trip Home

Dinners in our second home, usually something spicy, flavorful and to be enjoyed as a family. On a rare day when I ate early, I had the opportunity to capture my parents having dinner. My mom ate calmly and in good humor, and Sasha, our saluki darted here and there. Dad, Sasha’s favorite human was the obvious target. Dad yells at him freely, knowing that he is the only being who doesn’t get offended and cuddles him the next moment. At the end of the meal, Sasha got a nice piece of fish, fresh from the nearby coast. The puppy eyes succeeded yet again.

Many nights we spent on the terrace catching up; we had all met after a long time. It was cold and dewy, and you could see stars till the moon rose up from behind the tamarind tree. I don’t remember what we talked about, only that we went in to sleep because Sasha wouldn’t stop whining at the door. He prefers to directly go to a comfy bed after dinner.

Seagulls always follow the ferry when you reach the coast. It was 10 am and the ferry was heating up fast. We took shelter at the side of the deck, while mom went to give granny and sasha some company. My brother was so done with all this nature and sunlight, he couldn’t wait to resume his nocturnal life. We were just reaching the Mumbai port ‘Bhau cha dhakka’, In some time, we would be home to Mumbai.

We usually packed some sandwiches when we left for home. It was a long drive and the rich sandwiches that mom made were handy and filling. Saving them from the hungry Sasha in the car is always a task though. Granny wouldn’t eat the sandwich until our car was stationary on the car ferry. She was always motion sick and chanted something throughout the drive to distract herself. Alternatively, she would have some cloves or lemon drops to suck on.
